There is no airport in Makkah. Here is how pilgrims actually arrive.

King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is the airport most pilgrims use. It sits roughly 80–90 km from Makkah, usually about an hour to an hour and a half by road depending on traffic and the time of arrival. It has a dedicated Hajj and Umrah terminal, the widest choice of international routes, and the most direct flights from most regions.

Choose Jeddah when you want the shortest transfer to Makkah, when you plan to perform Umrah first, or when direct flights from your city are meaningfully cheaper or shorter.

Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah is smaller and generally quieter to pass through. Madinah is around 440 km from Makkah — several hours by road, or a faster journey on the Haramain high-speed rail between the two cities.

Choose Madinah when your itinerary starts in Madinah before travelling to Makkah, when you want a gentler arrival after a long flight, or when routes into Madinah suit your departure city better.

• Umrah first, Madinah after — fly into Jeddah, return from Madinah.
• Madinah first, Umrah after — fly into Madinah, return from Jeddah.
• Short trip, Makkah only — Jeddah both ways is usually simplest.

Open-jaw itineraries (arriving at one city and leaving from the other) often save a long backtrack and are worth pricing before defaulting to a straight return.

From Jeddah, most pilgrims travel by road — private transfer, shared coach or taxi. The Haramain high-speed railway also connects Jeddah, King Abdulaziz Airport, Makkah and Madinah, which many travellers prefer for the Makkah–Madinah leg. Whichever you choose, arrange it before you land: arrival halls after a long flight are not where you want to negotiate.
